The Hainan Biodiversity Expedition offers an integrated field-based learning experience centered on mangrove ecosystems, tropical rainforests, and community sustainability under the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Participants will engage in:
• Scientific investigation of mangrove biodiversity in Dongzhai Harbor, China’s largest contiguous mangrove wetland
• Intertidal species observation and ecological surveys, identifying key coastal species and understanding ecosystem dynamics
• Exploration of Hainan’s tropical rainforest ecosystems, including Yinggeling and Baihualing
• Community-based research in Li ethnic villages, examining the relationship between conservation and rural revitalization
• Service learning activities such as mangrove planting and removal of invasive species
• Leadership development workshops, reflection sessions, and structured SDGs learning modules
Through hands-on scientific observation, field research, teamwork, and reflective learning, students develop systems thinking, critical inquiry skills, ecological literacy, and a deeper understanding of the connection between biodiversity protection and sustainable development.
Upon successful completion, all participants will receive an SDGs General Education Practice Certificate issued under the PEPPA framework. Advanced participants who complete additional online SDGs training will also receive an SDGs General Education Training Certificate.
